The turf, Flora Aqua, contains a combination of grasses and wildflowers selected to withstand periodic waterlogging and strong water flows. The wide range of species in the turf achieves significant biodiversity in what can often be a sterile-looking environment.

The plants in the mats are extremely effective in swales where they slow down the water flow thereby reducing the incidence of flooding, and enabling groundwater recharge through infiltration.

Flora Aqua contains 20 species of wildflower and grasses that are all native to Britain. Typically found in floodplains, they have been chosen for their tolerance to alternating wet and dry conditions. The wide range of species in the turf achieves significant biodiversity in what can often be a sterile-looking environment. It is grown on a recycled carpet fibre mat which gives immediate erosion protection for bare swale banks. The mixture of wildflowers and grasses reduces the flow rate of water in the swale allowing time for natural percolation through the soil.
